Once I Stole a Heart

Once I stole a heart
I thought belonged to me,
Only to find out later
What I had claimed was not to be.

For this heart belongs to someone else
Who loved it as much as I,
So with the grace of God
I choked back a tear and said good-bye.
Many times I've tried to justify
If that was right or wrong,
As I'm forever hearing stories
Of how they don't get along.
Today I saw you on the street
But you just passed me by,
Were your glasses just too dark today
Or was it the swelling in your eye?
Although the flame inside my heart
Still burns for you so bright,
I wonder why you take abuse
Why can't you see the light?
Once I stole a heart
I thought belonged to me,
Last night your heart was laid to rest
With no time to file a plea.
